E46 manuals are faster than automatic counterparts and can be upgraded to be faster more readily. automatic's have a torque convertor which zaps power. 330 automatic does a BMW published time of 7.0 sec 0-60. 330 manual does a BMW published time of 6.4 secs 0-60.
I can tell you that the M54B30 in the E46 330ci is a very fun engine, and mine was still kicking at 209,000 miles when I sold my old E39 530i. And comparing manual to auto is no contest if you're after fun and driving enjoyment. It's tough to beat a pair like that in the E46 chassis if you're looking for some excitement.

For the front you will be fine as the front offsets are high so can run 235/35/19 which is plenty wide enough for the width of that wheel. What i was thinking is get 4 x front 19"s and put to wider tyres on the back and put those on my 330, prob is the 330 has 255 tyres on the back so i dont want less rubber than that really.

Back in the day, last I heard was consensus was that the ZF 5 speed was superior, stronger box. I read that people would actually swap the 5 speed in for the 6 speed when doing M3 swaps and/or doing serious heavy track driving. AFAIK the ratios are the same. just the 6 speed is for fuel economy.
The 328Ci is comparable to the 330Ci and it is definitely performance wise leaps behind the M3 in both acceleration, handling, and durability. The 335xi is as fast as the M3 in acceleration, and even in faster in some regards without the need to chip. It has great power delivery, good torque, but doesnt handle as well stock for stock.

This m3post forum is heavily heavily biased on e9x vehicles just look at the small ass section for e46 . With that being said e9x : PROS: Larger/more hp/newer/less issues. Cons: gas sucks/cost twice of e46 m3/parts cost more. e46 m3: PROS: way better gas mileage/easier to park/parts cost less/timeless look.
Who would win a hypothetical race from the line: E46 330ci, sport and premium package, 6spd. vs. E36 M3, 5spd. vs. G35 Coupe, 6spd. vs. RSX Type-S, 6spd. Modded for an additional 15whp (hence its inclusion in this race).
