Having long trad­ed on a Robin Hood-esque image, Capone opened a soup kitchen in his home base of Chica­go to serve the unfor­tu­nates sud­den­ly dis­pos­sessed by the dev­as­tat­ed Amer­i­can econ­o­my. “Capone’s soup kitchen served break­fast, lunch and din­ner to an aver­age of 2,200 Chicagoans every day,” writes History.com’s Christo­pher Klein.
WhenAl Capone’s soup kitchen opened at 935 South State Street, in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood, in mid-November 1930, hundreds of thousands of Chicagoans were out of work.

Manyof Chicago’s most historic hotels opened during the Prohibition Era. The site of Capone’s favorite barber, The Blackstone, opened a bit earlier in 1910 and also played host to Lucky Luciano’s National Crime Syndicate in the Crystal Ballroom. It’s registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
